The ministry of the sacristan is a vital yet often unseen role that ensures the smooth celebration of the liturgy. Sacristans prepare the sacred space, vessels, and vestments needed for Mass, allowing the clergy and liturgical ministers to focus fully on worship. At Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, sacristans are trained to serve at all eight churches, making this ministry one of flexibility, dedication, and deep reverence for the Eucharist.
Prepare the altar and sacred vessels, ensuring that everything needed for Mass is properly set up
Set out vestments, books, and liturgical items for the priest and other ministers
Assist with coordinating liturgical details, ensuring a smooth and prayerful celebration
Ensure proper storage and care of the sacred items before and after Mass
Be adaptable, trained to serve across all parish churches, ensuring consistency in worship no matter the location
This ministry is open to those who:
Have a strong attention to detail and a deep reverence for the Eucharist
Are willing to cross-train to serve at multiple parish churches
Can arrive early and stay after Mass to fulfill their duties
Are reliable and committed to their role as a behind-the-scenes steward of the liturgy
Sacristans receive thorough training to ensure they are confident and prepared to serve at any of our worship sites.
